At its core, art is a physical act, like dance or playing an instrument, but the resultant creation is visible, lasting, and preserves the characteristic imprint of the artist.
Pastels are well matched to the main focus of my work; plein air landscapes, because of their portability and speed of execution. Painting from life brings the subject directly to the painting. I need to be in the moment and work quickly in order to completely to gather all the essential elements of the scene before they slip away with the changing light. My studio pieces are informed by on site studies so I know what it is like to be there. Studio work often reflects a more contemplative process, less fleeting, but no less energetic.
